Phuket at a glance.

Having suffered unmistakable tragedy and damage as a result of the December 26 Tsunami that took so many lives, destroyed families and severely set back businesses, where does Phuket Island go from here?

How does an Island paradise, so dependant upon tourism for its livelihood, recoup its former prestige and take its rightful place as a pearl in the crown that is global, first class tourism?

I surely do not have the answer. In fact I really do not believe that any individual or even any tourism organization does. It remains to be seen how quickly the Island can return to normal. And that of course depends largely upon how quickly tour operators and travelers rebuild their confidence.

Surely by now most informed travelers will know that less than 20% of the Island was affected by the killer waves. More than 80% of all hotels stayed open and unscathed and those that were are largely repaired and operating normally. Still, tourism numbers are low and so are the prices.

All we can suggest is that you come back to this paradise Island. We do not mean to minimize the extent of the tragedy nor the deep sadness at the loss of life. We do mean to say that life must go on. Life depends upon going on. Workers need to return to their jobs, things need to get back to a semblance of life before Boxing Day 2004. Come back to Thailand. Come back to Phuket.

This is an Island with everything to offer. The beaches and crystal clear waters are the main draw of course, but that’s just the start. You can golf on any one of 4 championship courses.
